My work PC is occupied doing a thing so I was flipping through old pictures on my Facebook and stumbled on my senior design project, thought Oppo might enjoy it

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

It’s called Aethos, it’s an unmanned aircraft designed to launch a small satellite into orbit. The general design was inspired by the NASA AD-1 to use an oblique swing wing for efficient supersonic flight. The whole wing swings like a scissor to enable the plane to reach Mach 2. When the wing is unswept it produces a lift to drag ratio of 12 to 1.

If I remember correctly it’s about 40ft wide and 40ft long. Here it is next to an f15 and an A6

Why did you put the engines on the front?

Aerospace engineers want to know!

Pfft, this could have been done by a 5 year old playing with Catia.

-Denver, probably

Come on man. Not necessary.

How many engineering questions are answered, “Because it looks cool that way.”

Depends. Do they work for a Soviet design studio?

FWD

But I thought Oppo hated FWD.

Balance. It’s a light plane with a really heavy missile in the middle

Also because it’s been done (sorta)

Kinja'd!!!

I ran into serious problems with landing gear placement though. It was not the best idea, but it's unique!

And we remember how successful the XB-51 was. :D I figured there was a good reason.

What was the supersonic sweep angle to be?

Ahem "design bureaus". Studio reeks of Western bourgeois decadence

60 degrees IIRC. It looked very similar to the AD1

This was actually done in NX

Heh, I thought it might be, Catia’s comparatively low res looking graphics (at least for V5 like I’m used to) worked better for the joke though.

Meh, if you want to hang out on the internet (or, hell, have any hope of succeeding in life), you can’t be so thin-skinned that a little jab like this upsets you greatly. I would hope and do think that Denver can take a joke.

Was it just a mother ship or a full blown space plane? I’m assuming air launched rocket if mother ship?

Mothership. There’s a big bomb bay in the middle that holds a rocket
